ME/CFS & Dysautonomia ICD-10 Medical Billing Guide: G93.32, G90.A & Superbill Generator
1. The 2022 CDC Coding Breakthrough: G93.32 & G90.A
For decades, insurance claims for ME/CFS and dysautonomia were routinely denied because physicians submitted non-specific symptom codes such as R53.82 (Chronic fatigue, unspecified) or R42 (Dizziness and giddiness). Insurance claims examiners and disability reviewers weaponized these generic codes to classify patients as "merely tired" or "depressed."
On October 1, 2022, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) formally established specific, dedicated diagnosis codes in the ICD-10-CM:
- G93.32 – Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome: Explicitly classifies ME/CFS as a distinct neurological and immunological disease entity under Chapter 6 (Diseases of the nervous system).
- G90.A – Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS): The first official specific code for POTS, ending years of ambiguity under generic autonomic codes.

| ICD-10 Code | Official Clinical Description | When to Use & Reimbursement Impact |
|---|---|---|
| G93.32 | Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome | Primary Code: Required for all ME/CFS clinical claims. Qualifies for complex evaluation (CPT 99215). |
| G90.A | Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) | Diagnostic: Supports tilt table testing (CPT 95921/95922), IV saline therapy, and autonomic drugs. |
| U09.9 | Post COVID-19 condition, unspecified | Used when symptom onset directly followed confirmed or suspected SARS-CoV-2 infection. |
| G47.8 | Other sleep disorders (Alpha-delta sleep intrusion) | Justifies overnight polysomnography (PSG) and non-benzodiazepine hypnotics. |
| D89.40 | Mast cell activation, unspecified | Supports prescription mast cell stabilizers (Cromolyn sodium, Ketotifen) and DAO enzymes. |
| G60.8 | Other specified hereditary and idiopathic peripheral neuropathies | Used for biopsy-proven Small Fiber Neuropathy (SFN) and autonomic denervation. |
